Every musician has musicians in the generation above them that inspire them, mentor them and challenge them. Martin was one of those people for me. He taught me to take myself seriously as an artist, but, at the same time, not seriously at all. He taught me to challenge the status quo. And he reminded me that my job as a cellist was to tell musical stories that would stay with people after the concert had ended.
Some of these pieces have been recorded before (Uluru Song has only been recorded with a male voice singing). Some haven’t (Jerrinja Song, Waltzing With Wally and Intervention).
All of these pieces I perform regularly, and they are the ones that audience members come to speak to me about. Thank you, Martin, for your music, your friendship, your humour, your intelligence and your integrity.
